Monday Harvest – Sept 2nd 2013

Spring has arrived and the weather thus far has been absolutely beautiful.   Sunny and warm – perfect growing weather.  Long may it continue.  I have been trying to fill gaps in my beds at the moment, but I seem to be ripping out finishing crops faster than I can plant them at the moment.  There are exceptions though.  I am still getting a few broccoli side shoots and the watercress is growing really well.

Broccoli & Watercress

Lettuce is lovely at the moment.  Lots of beautiful big leaves.  My latest radish sowing is just about big enough to pull.

Easter Egg radishes

The parsley is getting bigger and bigger and the last of the chillies have been cut.  These chillies are really the last of last seasons crop – these set in Autumn and have slowly ripened over winter.   I potted up a couple of my better performing chilli plants today and harvested a couple of fruit at the time.

Ahh, spring. A magical time in the garden. I’m ready for fall and a break in the heat.

  2. Daphne says:

Pretty little radishes. I really need to get mine in the ground before it is too late to get a harvest.

Nice lettuce and radishes, but then it’s spring! I replanted my watermelon radishes and hope I get some this fall. I didn’t read the instructions (who needs instructions for radishes?) which said they would bolt if planted in the spring, which is exactly what they did.

Lovely harvest – those radishes look wonderful. Hasn’t the weather been amazing! We’ve been eating lots of broccoli lately, thanks to the seeds you sent me, plus some purple sprouting ones I bought. One of my few winter growing successes! Might have to give radishes a try next time…

    Hi Liz,
I love your blog–content and format. I’ve been blogging on Tumblr (wrong platform) for almost three years. I plan to migrate over to WordPress.org. You can see from my blog that our style is similar. Would you mind sharing the theme you are using? You can contact me at my email address if you prefer.
    Thanks,
    Susan

      Hi Susan

I think the theme I’m using is called Twenty Eleven. My blog is selfhosted so I’m not sure if there is any variation between the themes on the WordPress hosted site and those that are hosted elsewhere.

I just love what you keep going all through winter! The radishes look particularly lovey!

  7. Michelle says:

Your watercress looks so good. My plants never did produce much, but they are still alive. I’m hoping they will perk up when the weather gets cold, or better yet that some of the many seeds that the plants produced will volunteer all over the place. I think I should cut back the ragged stems and toss them around the garden and see what happens.

We certainly have been hit with a bit of spring, I’m not ready for it, it is too early. LOL.
Looks like you will have a great harvest over the next few months. I wanted to let you know that do I always look, but not always comment. It is great to see your garden flourishing and to see what else you are doing.

  9. Norma Chang says:

You are entering spring and I am thinking about fall and frost and then winter, still trying to get used to the differences. I forgot to sew lettuce seeds and may be too late now.

  10. Mark Willis says:

Your Spring and our Autumn are very similar just now – lovely weather and productive gardens. Just the ticket!

  11. I love spring – waiting for the next one now but we have plenty of winter jobs waiting for us.

  12. Yvonne says:

My watercress is coming to the end and flowering, similar to the baby broccoli. It’s my first time growing Purple Sprouting Broccoli and it’s about to produce. I also have plenty of snow/sugar snap peas at the moment to fill in the gap.

  13. mac says:

Beautiful watercress, so nice to have a garden year round.

  14. Lovely lush harvest, I do love those beautiful radish, the purplish ones are beautiful. And agree with Mark, your Spring does seem very similar to our late summer/Autumn.

  15. Sarah says:

The last photo of the basket full of parsley and chillies looks fabulous… and the watercress is an impressive harvest too. Is the watercress difficult to grow – something I haven’t tried.

  16. Lea says:

    Beautiful harvest!
    Love the basket, too!
Hope you are having a wonderful day!

I love your pictures -your harvest looks wonderful!

  18. Nina says:

    Looking good, as always, Liz!

I can’t believe that I still have heaps of chillis and they haven’t stopped producing all through winter. The jalepenos are ripening slowly but the ‘inferno’ have been doing so consistently.

I’m willing some of my stuff to hurry up and finish so that I can improve the soil in time to plant out the seedlings waiting in the wings. Silly, really. I spend all that time nurturing and then will them gone!
