A couple of weeks ago I posted about the, then upcoming, Coburg Farmers Market. Well the second one is this Saturday: 8:00am – 1pm at Coburg North Primary School, 180 O’Hea St Coburg. It occurred to me yesterday that I have yet to post on the first market so I thought it was to time to remedy that and perhaps give you a taste about what the next one will be like.
The first one was held on a beautiful sunny day and our the forecast for this weekend suggests the weather will, once again, be perfect. I do think that weather helps a market immensely.
Personally I will still go even if it is raining but wont necessarily enjoy it nearly as much. I suspect I’m not the only one who enjoys a market in good weather as the first market was pretty busy.
I stayed for quite a while (the market is at the primary school which means there is lots of play equipment to entertain the kids) and during the time I was there a lot of the fresh produce sold out. This week I plan to shop early.
The stalls at the market were nicely varied, a few offering preserves, honey, fresh pasta and that sort of thing as well a good number selling fresh produce and basics like bread.
There was a stall selling the most amazing looking bagels but as yet I haven’t tried them as they had sold out by the time I did my buying round of the stalls. Sigh…. Produce wise there was a nice selection including hard to get seasonal things like chestnuts as well as more common produce like: pumpkin, apples, greens, potatoes and so on.
All in all it was a great market. I just hope the coffee maker gets their act together this week, although having said that the wonderful O’Hea St bakery is just a stones throw away and they do great coffee there.
Sounds like this market has a lot to offer. I’m thinking if I had coffee to go with those bagels I might go for breakfast! I do love visiting farmer’s markets too. My wife and I are planning a trip to Hawaii next year, and we are timing our stay so we can visit the various markets on their ‘big’ days. The ones here at home haven’t started quite yet, since it is early in the season and things are running late this year anyway.
Sounds like a fab holiday. Would you believe the bagel man wasn’t there this week. Perhaps next time.
Oh great to hear it was a success and smart thinking having it at the primary school so the kids are entertained. Did they have any veggie seedlings ?
just looked again at your pics and saw the veggie seedlings…will have to send my daughter by for a look for me.
They didn’t have nearly as many this week – I think the best seedling stalls must only be coming on the 4th Saturday.
I love to go to Farmer’s Markets. This one looks like great fun.
Hope the weather is good for the next one, too.

When we lived in Melbourne we lived in Coburg – but that was a long time ago now – we left in 2000 and I still miss Melbourne like mad. We used to go to the Preston market for most of our food but that was in the days before Farmers Markets. Coburg would have been much improved by a Farmers’ Market – this one looks great.
I love the Everleigh Markets in Sydney but don’t get there now.
I have tried the local Wagga Wagga Farmers’ Market but it’s not great. I have heard that the Farmers’ Markets in Canberra are good and I will be taking a trip there to see how they are soon. One day, we will sell some of our produce at a Farmers’ Market… a little lamb, eggs and honey maybe and what ever is glutting in the garden and orchard. Dreams…
Shame the Wagga Wagga market isn’t great. I go to Preston market on the non Coburg Farmers Market weeks. I have to say I do enjoy it although the fruit and veg quality at Preston is only middling I reckon. I do like the idea of a nice Farmers Market stall myself….of course I have nothing to sell so I will just have to make do by reading about yours.
