Monday Harvest – 2nd Dec 2013

Our weather is behaving a lot like a yoyo at the moment.  Today it got to 36.  The forecast high for Thursday is 17.  I’m struggling to acclimatise and the plants seem to be having much the same problem.

The silver beet doesn’t seem to know what to do – some of the plants are bolting but others seem to be resisting the urge and continuing to produce big beautiful leaves.  Perfect for silver beet and feta quiche.

Silverbeet

The ever dependable rocket keeps going regardless and the lettuce, although it wilts a bit on warmer days is back to its old self in the evenings.

Basket of greens

Greens aside my only harvests this week were few, small, perfectly blue and very very exciting.  I had my first blueberries.  I ate the first 3 without alerting my kids to their presence but guilt got the better of me so they ate the next 2.  All were pronounced delicious but none have yet to survive long enough to be photographed.  Perhaps this week….

In the meantime head over to Daphne’s where you will find harvests big, small and in between.

Yep, understand the weather thing and in addition for me I have had no rain. Two new enormous water tanks and no rain. So given that the only wanted we have is in a tiny concrete tank that does us for everything, I am currently training my vegetables to be sparing. And I’m mulching like crazy…

I likewise, well in a related sense, have beetroot both bolting and not-bolting. I also have never-ending rocket with one plant going to seed once, and now I can’t get rid of the stuff. Not that I’d want to. The blueberries sound fabulous.

  3. Well I’m glad it isn’t just me – what is this weather doing?? Good to hear you got some blueberries at last, too.

  4. Yoyo weather – the worst sort for plants!

  5. Daphne says:

Blueberries are rarely photographed here either. It would be nice to be able to pick enough to do that, but I don’t have very prolific bushes yet. I hope they get there.

  6. My silver beet is also bolting, a lot, but I just continue to ignore it. I should really pull them out and plant something new there.

How crazy is this weather? I really can’t keep up! I want to water my plants today after the heat yesterday, but apparently we’re going to have thunderstorms and rain later so there isn’t much point. Poor veggies must be as confused as we are!

That’s a huge swing in temperature, I would be confused and wanting to bolt myself! Good thing the blueberries don’t seem to mind. My blueberry plants are doing a winter bloom again this year. Last year I kept trying to remove the blossoms, but this year I’ll just let them do their thing. Maybe I’ll get an extra early crop come spring.
