Monday Harvest – 5th Sept 2011

I have to admit that harvest hasn’t really been my focus this week.  This is largely because it was my daughter’s 5th birthday on Wednesday and on Saturday we had a party for her at our house.  What this meant was that I felt obliged to actually clean and tidy the house – which  constitutes a major time investment as my day to day standards are frankly not as high as they should be…..

Anyway I did manage a small harvest on Wednesday to prepare her requested birthday dinner – a Vietnamese style noodle soup.  As a result this weeks harvest is heavy on the aromatics and herbs: Lemongrass, Kaffir Lime leaves, Vietnamese mint, Coriander, Spring Onions, Mint & Chillies.  I really enjoy herby aromatic soups so I was more than happy to devote a bit of time to making it.

For other Monday Harvests visit Daphne’s Dandelions.

OOOHH Yum! Wow a 5 year old requesting a Vietnamese soup! I hope she had a wonderful birthday!

    • Liz says:

Thanks Phoebe, She’s really into her soups. Don’t get me wrong she is not a perfect eater by any means but she is a big fan of soup – noodle ones in particular but also minestrone etc. Unfortunately her brother is less so…….

That is my kind of favourite basket harvest! Oh I can imagine lovely dish to make with those. Vietnamese soup sounds delicious.

I have to say I was particularly pleased with the version I made last week. I am just trying to find a bit of time to get some soup photos together and I will post the recipe – if only so I can recreate it…..Would love to know what you would have made.

  3. Melissa (AKA Bee Girl) says:

How wonderful! Your harvest may be small, but it’s intentional and beautiful…what more could you ask for? Happy birthday to the Little One…being 5 is a big deal 🙂

    • Liz says:

She certainly thinks 5 is a big deal – personally I go from feeling like it was yesterday she was born to being unable to visualise my life prior. But you’re right it is important – school next year – very exciting, I cant seem to leave comments on your blog and would dearly like to – I think it thinks I’m spam and is filtering me out. So apologies that I haven’t left any to date. Incidently the link to your site from your name above doesn’t work.

What a treasure for her to ask for an herby aromatic soup for her birthday – as a five year old! Gardens are wonderful things… they generally are content to take a back seat in our lives when other things demand more of our attention for a while.

    • Liz says:

Her cousins have recently moved to Vietnam and I think its a part of continuing to connect with them – well that and the high salt content….. You’re right too – they really are quite low maintenance when you want them to be.

I probably would have invested way more time in planning for a 5 yr old birthday too! Mine celebrated theirs in May before the season had really got going so that was good! Herbs are good! And super good that she is requesting something that uses up your garden harvests!

I love it. Both of my boys are huge fans of soup as well. And we can usually get them to behave if we promise to take them out to Pho for dinner.

    • Liz says:

Its interesting isn’t it – I can never predict what kids will like and invariably whenever I try I get it very wrong…my freezer is littered with the evidence of my failures….I have just tried to leave a comment on your blog – it doesn’t seem to like me so apologies for my silence.
