Monday Harvest – 22nd August 2011

In Melbourne its almost getting to that time when the winter crops start to run out and the spring and summer ones are yet to start.  Luckily I still have watercress to go with my Pumpkin & Feta Filo.

Broccoli, Lettuce and Chillies made up a mid week harvest.  The broccoli we ate with fish, the chillies in the next nights curry and the lettuce was for a 4 year old who likes to pretend shes a rabbit.

Along with the chillies the Chicken Saag  also used silver beet.

By the end of the week it was time for more watercress salad.

The forecast is for a warm week this week so I am busy feverishly sowing all my spring and summer crops – what a different a bit of sun makes – everything seems to be suddenly growing so quickly.  Such an exciting time of the year!

Sun really does make a huge difference. We have had a summer with very little of it and the overall garden production is down as a result. Your harvests this week are quite nice and I like hearing how you used what your collected in your menus etc.

  2. And our summer harvests are now winding down :/

    Your broccoli looks fantastic!

  3. Great harvest! Good luck with all your sowing! I hope the sun shines brightly for you!!!

  4. Your watercress is beautiful!! I’ve never grown it before but I think I have some seeds that I got free. I will have to give it a try!

I love it – but a warning once you have it you may never get rid of it – mine has seeded in everywhere. Actually the seedlings are pretty easy to spot and get rid of (or indeed transplant) if they are badly sited though.

It’s pretty crazy how quickly the seasons seem to change. Enjoy sowing!

ha ha, I know a little 5 yr old that loves to eat lettuce like a little rabbit too! She steals my produce right off the counter! They would make great friends!

Its nice isn’t it. Now if only my toddler boy would do the same thing……

      • Shawn Ann says:

oh I know! My 22 mo old won’t touch a vegetable. The only way I get him to eat veggies is the baby/toddler organic vegetable pouches. 22 mos and still eating pureed vegetables! But he loves his pouches and there are a lot of good varieties thank goodness! Funny thing is, he ate practically any veg that I pureed up for him for baby food when he was smaller, even eggplant! Stinker!

        • Liz says:

Yeah same – mine likes risotto so I hide a few in there but otherwise its hard – my mother says my brother didn’t touch vegetables until he was about 18. Perhaps its a boy thing…..

I’m glad things are starting to warm up for you. I always love reading the Australian blogs since they are opposite of us. Of course the winter is my favorite since I’ve got nothing but snow and ice then.

    • Liz says:

You have such an interesting climate – great extremes – here its either comparatively mild, warm or hot which is great for growing perenials but less good if you want to build a snowman. I know which my kids would go for….

  8. Things are winding down for us as they’re gearing up for you. Soon, we’ll be looking at your blog with envy, waiting for all of the snow to melt 🙂
