Monday Harvest – 29th August 2011

I’m afraid that my harvest this week is meagre, or to be more accurate my photo’s of harvest are meagre.  This week I used quite a lot of parsley but failed to photograph it.  Ate quite a lot of watercress but failed to photograph it.  Made a few batches of stock – celery, carrots, thyme, bay leaves, and more parsley but failed to photograph them.  Well what did I photograph?  This:

Yes more silver beet!  This lot I braised and served with some chicken cooked with lemon and sage.  Very nice it was too.

I also photographed this:

Which topped off a noodle stir fry served with salmon in a soy and ginger sauce.  Really good.

Now I know this last item is not really a harvest but I was cleaning out my cupboard when I found it right at the back – so at a push you could say I harvested it from the cupboard.  Who knows how long its been there but I think now the only sensible option would be to plant it and see what happens…… or perhaps photograph it from a few more angles cos it does look really cool and frankly I suspect Melbourne’s climate is not really suited to growing sweet potatoes…..

    Plant it!

It sounds like you got caught up in doing the harvests and eating and just missed the photography piece. I have a hard time remembering to weigh and photograph everything – as I am harvesting for the meal usually and want to get right to the cooking process.

I agree – plant it! What a nice find!

  3. Barbie says:

Definitely plant it. I bet it will do well. Your silverbeets look so healthy!

What a nice sweet potato. Aren’t you just starting your spring/summer? When mine got like that I gently twisted off the stems, put them in water and let them start roots, then once they had leaves, I planted them. Had about 6, and they are growing very nicely all over the squash patch! I can’t wait to dig them up in the next month or so and see what I have! They are probably some of the healthiest looking plants in my garden right now! Go ahead! Plant those little babies!

Yay – thanks for this – I have cut off a couple of the stems and they are sitting in a glass of water in the laundry. I hope you get a big crop – there’s something very intriguing about vegetables that grow under the ground – I even get a bit of a thrill pulling up carrots and with potatoes its all I can do to restrain myself enough to let the kids find them. Have you grown them before?

I agree, plant it, see what happens! I’m like you, it’s difficult to photograph much of the harvest. I figure that if I can photograph a veggie at least once during the season that at least I’ve documented it for future reference.

It is hard to photograph it all – especially as I’m often heading into the garden while cooking dinner and only once its cut up and in the pot do I think ohhhhhh….

  6. Liz says:

Barbie, Allison – I will definitely do as you suggest. I like the idea of growing sweet potato and even if its is a dismal failure I will have tried….

What a great find! I’ve been thinking about planting sweet potatoes so I’m excited to see how it works out for you!
